Learn a new skill and develop a new hobby this summer! Each camper will have the opportunity to work with a variety of tools and materials and every boy will be provided personal guidance while working on two to three individual projects during this special one-week tutorial session. A variety of wood project ideas and wood species will be offered, and the crowning achievement of this weeklong course for new woodworkers will be the production of a handsome and especially sturdy bookcase with decorative and carved trim work. This bookshelf would be appropriate for a bedroom or other location selected by your son. Other possible projects may include carving a bowl and candleholders on a wood lathe or constructing a birdhouse, a joined wooden keepsake box, a jigsaw puzzle project, or a decorative wooden clock. In order to provide an instructive and personal experience, our two faculty instructors will work with only a limited number of students. Woodworking experience is not a prerequisite, only a willingness to learn a new ability and the appropriate attention to detail is all that is required to enroll and begin working with wood as you are guided through projects. This specialty camp came into being at the request of campers and parents. With their input we have envisioned this workshop to have the following goals:
1. To provide a hands on course that initiates the learning of a new skill during the summer and the possible development of a lifelong hobby.
2. To learn basic carpentry skills and the proper use of a variety of tools.
3. To encourage pride in one’s work and craftsmanship through projects that a boy wants to take home.
