    8th @ St Albans--Loss - Away

    Wednesday, April 2nd, 2008

    St Alban’s   3,    The Heights  1   (in a 4-inning game, shortened by a 60 minute time-limit.)

Dan Russell and Joe Kelly pitched two innings each and combined to hold St. Alban’s to only one clean hit, while striking out 4 batters.  St Alban’s, however, took advantage of 5 walks received and some timely wild pitches and errors to score three runs.  Meanwhile, The St. Alban’s was dominant, striking out 9 batters (6 of whom were called strike three’s by our very own Al Battista, who was umpiring the game) and only surrendering two hits.  The big hit by The Heights was an rbi triple hit by Dan Russell.  The only other hit was by Heights 7th-grader and centerfielder Ed Nelson.  Both third baseman Jose Aguirre and second baseman Robby Yousaitis made  excellent defensive infield plays to help keep the game close.

    8th @ Sidwell--Won - Away

    The Heights  1,    Sidwell Friends  0   (in a 4-inning game, shortened by a 60 minute time-limit.)

Joe Kelly pitched a 1-hit shutout masterpiece for the win, going all four innings, striking out 6 batters, and picking off a batter at first base.  Joe also doubled in the second inning and reached on an error in the fourth inning.  Nick McCabe smoked a line drive single to right field in his only at bat, and Kyle McCauley earned his first hit of the season as well.  Jose Aguirre earned two walks in his only two plate appearances and Nick Hopkins, as a pinch runner for Jose, scored the winning run in the fourth inning, after stealing two bases and scoring on the catcher’s throwing error.  All fourteen players got in the game and participated in this first win of the season for the A-Team.

  • 04/11 - 2:45 pm
    8th v Bullis--Loss - Home

    Bullis   8,    The Heights  6   (in a 4-inning game)

Dan Russell and Nick McCabe pitched tenaciously for a combined 4 innings.  Bullis, however, took advantage of some walks, errors, wild pitches, and timely big hits to outscore The Heights by two runs.  The biggest hit by The Heights was an rbi-double off the fence in right-center field hit by Joe Kelly that just missed being a homerun by a few feet.  Other extra-base hits were by Kyle McCauley and Jose Aguirre.

  • 04/15 - 2:45 pm
    8th v GDS--Tied 2-2 - Home

The Heights   2,    Georgetown Day School  2   (in a 5-inning game)

Joe Kelly pitched tremendously for 5 innings holding GDS to two unearned runs, despite 9 Heights defensive errors.  Joe Kelly and catcher Dan Russell combined to erase 4 GDS batters on the basepaths from pickoffs and runners caught stealing.  The Heights finally scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to tie GDS.  With the bases still full of Heights runners in the bottom of the 5th inning and the score tied at 2-2 with one out, The GDS pitcher executed a timely “step-off” move from the windup to pick off the Heights baserunner from second base.  That play probably was the key to GDS holding on to narrowly avoid defeat and go home with a tie.  Hats off to both teams for a hard fought tie.

  • 04/18 - 2:45 pm
    8th v Flint Hill--Lost - Home

Flint Hill   4,    The Heights  1   (in a 4-inning game)

On a day when The Heights was missing Joe Kelly, Dan Russell, and Nick McCabe, three other Heights pitchers (Johnny Staines, Jose Aguirre, and Braedon Lawson) pitched impressively against a strong Flint Hill lineup for a combined 4 innings.  Flint Hill, however, took advantage of some walks, errors, wild pitches, and timely big hits to outscore The Heights by three runs.  The Heights rallied for their only run in the bottom of the fourth inning and brought the potential tie run to the plate with two outs and two on base. The Flint Hill pitcher then bore down and struck out the final Heights batter to end the game.  The Heights baserunning was greatly improved overall with all runners taking good aggressive leads and stealing bases appropriately when given the sign.

  • 04/26 - 9:00 am
    8th @ Potomac--Lost - Away

he Potomac School 7, The Heights 6 (6 innings)

Joe Kelly pitched great but The Potomac School came from behind to beat The Heights in the bottom of the 6th inning with some “creative” cleanup-batter-into-the leadoff-spot substituting” by The Potomac School coach, two hits, a walk, a hit batter,  and two untimely outfield errors.  Hats off to the Flint Hill players who never gave up and Hats off to The Heights players for a long, gutsy, battle to the end.

  • 05/05 - 2:45 pm
    8th @ Flint Hill--Lost - Away

Flint Hill School 8, The Heights 6 (4 innings)

In the top of the first inning, scheduled starting pitcher Joe Kelly suffered a hip injury getting back to third base on a the Flint Hill catcher’s pickoff throw attempt.  He came out of the game without throwing a pitch.  Nick McCabe and Jose Aguirre pitched admirably as fill-ins on short notice, but Flint Hill built an early 6-1 lead  - aided by some walks, errors and timely hits.  The Heights battled back to within 6-5, and Joe Kelly valiantly pitched an inning in relief, but Flint Hill earned an 8-6 victory in 4 innings.  Their were key hits by Dan Russell (triple) and Nick McCabe (rbi single) to highlight the Heights comeback attempt.
